Pushing yourself this year?

We all have times in our lifes we want to shake things up and are looking of new ways to look after ourselves, physically, mentally or spiritually. Many of our regular swimmers have their own reasons for thier daily or weekly visits and we have spoken to another regualr swimmer to find out why she loves swimming at Willowgate, Meet Lynne.

What got you interested in Open water swimming?

10 years ago, I stood at the edge of Loch Lomond, whilst on a Girls minibreak, and thought I’d bloody love to be in there swimming. I have always loved swimming but didn’t do it much over the years as swimming pool changing rooms are too hot, and I didn’t have the courage to do it in open water.

I then started to read about the amazing benefits of open water swimming, for mental health, but also for menopause. I have been feeling the effects of menopause for the last few years, so earlier this year I mentioned it to my fab friend.

What motivated you to swim at Willowgate?

I read a post on the Willowgate swimmers page from a Stephanie, whom I didn’t know. Basically, thanking Willowgate and the other swimmers for helping her to swim and be healthier. I was sitting in my garden at the time with my iPad and was totally inspired, thinking “get your lazy ass out of bed and in gear McDonald” So, I went onto the website and booked my morning swims for the month of May, then sent Stephanie a pm telling her how inspiring she was! And that was the start of a beautiful friendship! She is a super star!

How does Open Water Swimming make you feel now?

I try to go twice a week in the mornings, and I feel so revived, alive, and calm. It’s a strange sensation as you feel invigorated, clear headed and relaxed. My menopausal night sweats are nowhere near as bad, my head is clearer, and I think I’m doing good!! Earlier on devastatingly, lost my father-in-law, and I wasn’t going to go for my pre booked swim the day after, but I did. The support and love I got from my fellow swimmers reminded me why this is The Best Sport and community ever! The Willowgate group is amazing, and I say a wee thank you prayer every time I’m there, as you are my Happy Place. Thank you.

Thank you Lynne for sharing your reason why you love Open Water Swimming and honoured we are your happy place!
