Join our team!
We’re looking for some new instructors to join our team!
Based in the centre of Perth, Willowgate is a charity which offers a whole range of different activities to a big slice of our community. No two days are the same, and we have some of the most loyal and friendly customers an organisation could ask for. That paired with a great team who are fun, hardworking and inclusive makes us think it’s a pretty good place to work! Like most outdoor centres, summer is our busiest time, so we need a few more team members to get us through the busiest bits. In summer our busiest activities are paddlesport taster experiences and our kids activity days, this is what we’ll need the most help with.
This role is all about having fun whilst providing a great customer experience. You’ll be working independently with groups of up to 8 adults or children to deliver a range of introductory activity sessions. Our busiest activity during summer is our popular Kids Adventure Days; these activity days consist of a morning full of watersports followed by an afternoon of land activities e.g. archery, team building, orienteering and bushcraft. A large part of your role will be running these activity days for up to 8 children per instructor. As well as this, our most popular taster experiences are Stand Up Paddleboarding and Kayaking. These are 1hr 45min sessions where your job is to ensure our guests have the best time they could whilst providing top end customer service, instruction and safety. Our team work collectively to ensure everything is set up and put away, so the end of your day will be spent washing wetsuits and disinfecting equipment with everyone else next to you helping.
This is a casual contract with hours/days changing as the summer business builds. We would expect this to be around 4/5 days during our busiest months (July/August) with a gradual build up and quietening either side of this. The wage is between national minimum and national living wage dependant on age. Your working day includes a 30 minutes lunch break.
This role would be suited to someone who is relatively new to the outdoors industry, or someone who has a couple of seasons under their belt but is looking for a new opportunity and to expand their experience in a range of activities.
What we’re looking for
To us, the most important thing is your personality! We’re looking for a people person who is easy to get along with and is enthusiastic to get stuck in and be involved. You’ll need excellent customer service skills and should have experience working with both adults and children in a customer facing role.
A love for the outdoors is essential, with experience in paddlesports (kayak, canoe & SUP) necessary. You should have good initiative and be able to think on your feet in an ever-changing environment. Being able to create games, adapt to different ages/ personalities as well as being organised and safe are vital skills we look for in our instructor team. As well as paddlesport experience it would be advantageous if you have knowledge of a range of outdoor skills including fire lighting, environmental knowledge, bushcraft, archery etc.
Ideally you will already have your Paddlesports Instructor (or equivalent), however we are all about the people here at Willowgate, and personality is really important to us. If we think you’re the perfect fit for our customers, we’d be happy to help you with the paddle qualifications needed as long as you’ve already got the skills and knowledge required. All instructors must have a current 16 hour first aid qualification before starting work.
So, what are you waiting for?
If Willowgate sounds like somewhere you’d like to work and you think you’d fit in well, then please get in touch by emailing Emily with your CV and a covering email about yourself at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’ll be closing applications at the end of February, with interviews taking place early March.
